Coeburn, VA

Dewey "John" McCoy (Pops) born June 23, 1962 of Coeburn, VA went home to be with the Lord May 15, 2023 at Pikeville Medical Center in Pikeville, KY. He was of a Christian Faith. John was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and retired coal miner of 37 years, where he was known as "Big John" and "The Legend" because he was one of the best miner men and all around coal miner. He was a jack of all trades, an avid outdoorsman, loved to fish, hunt, and most of all he loved spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his father, Leland "Bob" McCoy; mother, Audrey Harvey; brother, Leland McCoy; and step-father, Rufus Harvey.

He leaves behind the love of his life of 32 years, Helen McCoy; son, Jeremy Kilgore of St. Paul; daughter, Rachel Gibson and husband, Chris of Coeburn, VA; three grandchildren, Austin Kilgore and Ariel Dotson of Wise, VA, Destiny Gibson and Peyton Gibson of Coeburn, VA, all of whom he loved very much, they were his life and he was theirs; sisters, Rosemary Harvey of Coeburn, VA, Eva Ann McCoy of Appalachia, VA, Judy Dawn Gilbert of Ohio, and Patsy Harvey of Norton, VA; brothers, Ransom Harvey of Coeburn, VA, Nathan Harvey of Coeburn, VA, Danny Ray Harvey of Big Stone Gap, VA, and Steven Harvey of Coeburn, VA; several nieces, nephews, a special cousin, Timothy and Pam McCoy of St. Paul; his best friend of 23 years and son-in-law, Christopher Gibson; and special little buddy, Peyton Brian.

Visitation will be Thursday, May 18, 2023 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Estes Funeral Home in Coeburn, VA. Funeral services will be Friday, May 19, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. with military rite at Estes Funeral Home Chapel. Graveside will follow in the Keith Cemetery in Castlewood, VA.

Pallbearers will be Ransom Harvey, Billy Salyers, Michael Ring, Jason Keith, Randy McCoy, and Taylor French. Honorary pallbearers will be Chris Gibson, Jeremy, Kilgore, Austin Kilgore, Wayne Ring, Brody Robinette, and Ernie Salyers.
