COEBURN – Esther Jewel Edwards Gibson, age 84, of Coeburn, VA, went home to be with the Lord on April 17, 2026. She was a member of The Coeburn Church of God in South Coeburn. Esther was a substitute teacher and salesperson for many years, who loved her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Kimberly Gibson; grandson, Scottie Nickels; her great-granddaughter, Aubrey Reed; and her parents, James Harlan and Eliza Edwards. Sisters and brothers-in-law: Margaret (Buck) Couch, Kathleen (Burley) Couch, Blanche (Claude) Bright, Rose Conalee (Billy) Counts, and a brother, James Frank Edwards; nephews, Dale Couch and Bruce Couch.
Surviving are her husband of 66 years, Edwin Rothwell Gibson; children, Abby (Terry) Jackson, Barry (Deb) Gibson, Dwight (Christine) Gibson, Kelly (Tim) Tickles, Charles (Missi) Gibson, and Mitch (Leighann) Gibson; grandchildren, Dawn (Nate) Pattison, Jill Jackson, Mark (Autumn) Jackson, Joshua (Priscilla) Funk, Danielle (Jarrod) Aistrop, Katelyn (Daniel) Rose, Allison (Johnny) Mullins, Hayley (Mike) Reed, Blaine Gibson, Isaiah Bentley, Caliph Gibson, and Paisley Gibson; great grandchildren, Skyler (Dave) Carmody, Hailey Hall, Jossalyn Funk, Kyle Funk, Jenavieve Funk, Ezekiel Funk, Isaac Wells, Cason Wells, Kiffin Aistrop, Carter Rose, Jake Mullins, Sammy Mullins, Lily Reed, and Charlie Reed; brother-in-law, Robert (Faye) Gibson; nephews, Alan Couch, Joe Bright, Jim Couch, Ritchie Gibson, and Michael Gibson; nieces, Nancy Jenkins and Billie Brown; and her special niece and lifelong friend, Jane Dotson.
Esther's warmth extended far beyond her family. She was deeply involved in the community. Esther was a member of the Coeburn Women's Club, Coeburn Alumni Association, Coeburn PTA, Coeburn Band Boosters, Coeburn Little League, a Cub Scout Leader, and served on the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts Committees. She raised funds for Coeburn sports and various churches in the community. She was the first to bring food to a grieving family or visit a shut-in. She was a living example of kindness and of helping others.
Family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, 2026, with funeral services following visitation at 2:00p.m at Estes Funeral Home in Coeburn, VA, with Pastor Brian Brown officiating. Burial to follow at the Crab Orchard Church Cemetery.
