In Loving Memory of James Dean “JD” Garrett

James Dean “JD” Garrett, 87, passed away peacefully on August 12, 2026. In Johnson city Tennessee He was born on October 2, 1938, on his family farm in Scott County, Virginia, to the late James Wesley Garrett and Effie Lockwood Garrett.

JD was a friend to anybody and a Papaw to everybody. He was known and remembered for his kind, generous personality and his ability to make everyone he met feel like family. JD truly never met a stranger. His warmth, humor, and generous heart touched the lives of countless people throughout his 87 years.

JD was a lifelong miner and farmer. He spent his working years as a blaster for Rim rock quarry where he spent countless years working for his friend George Barnett. After retirement, JD enjoyed spending his days tending to his prized garden. Farming was more than a pastime to him, it was a way of life, and he took great pride in what he grew and shared with others.

JD was preceded in death by his parents, James Wesley and Effie Lockwood Garrett; his son, James Roger Garrett; and his two sisters, Gerleen Kennedy and Loretta Sue Gillenwater, and son in law Micheal Humes

He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Thelma Garrett; his daughter, Tessa Humes of Marble Hill, Missouri; granddaughter Elizabeth (Drew Hunter) of Marble Hill, Missouri; granddaughter Christy Garrett (Doug) of Coeburn, Virginia; grandson Roger Garrett of Coeburn, Virginia; granddaughter Barbara Adkins of Coeburn, Virginia; great-grandson Hobert Salyers of Coeburn, Virginia; great-granddaughter Brooklyn Garrett of Coeburn, Virginia; and one very special great-great-grandson, Layton Christopher Dean Salyers; sisters, JeanMcRenynolds, and Jeanette Powers, several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

JD’s life was defined not only by the work of his hands, but by the love he gave to his family, friends, and everyone fortunate enough to know him. He was a husband, father, Papaw, farmer, and friend whose kindness will never be forgotten

His memory will be cherished, and his love will live on through his family for generations to come.

Visitation will be held Sunday, August 16, 2026, 3:00pm to 5:00pm at Estes Funeral Home in Coeburn, VA. Funeral services will follow at 5:00pm with Pastor Wayne Hager officiating. Burial will be on Monday, August 17, 2026, at 11:00am at the Wolfe family cemetery on Chestnut Ridge Dungannon, Virginia. Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home by 10:30am to follow in procession to the cemetery.
