Coeburn, VA ~ John Aldon "Pete" Elkins, 87, died Thursday, January 6, 2005 at Heritage Hall Health Care, Wise, Virginia.
Mr. Elkins was a retired coal miner of Clinchfield Coal Co. and a member of U.M.W.A. Also a member of Coeburn Masonic Lodge #97 A.F. & A. M. and attended Mary's Chapel Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clinton and Hattie McDavid Elkins; Step mother, Zelma Holbrooks Elkins; Son, Robert "Bob Elkins; Brothers, Estel Elkins, Silas Elkins and Harry Elkins; Step sister, Coleen Bevins.
Survivors include his wife Iris Artrip Elkins; Son & Daughter-in-law, William E. "Bill" Elkins and Sybil Elkins, Lynchburg, VA, Daughter-in-law, Sandra Elkins Godwin, Surry, VA; Grandsons, J.D. Elkins and wife, Lynn, Surry, VA and Williams Elkins, Jr. and wife, Jeannie, Lynchburg, VA; Granddaughter, Kimberly Layman and husband, Frank, Lynchburg, VA; 4 Great Granddaughters, Kelsey, Katlyn, Kinsley and Karson of Lynchburg, VA; Brothers, Arvil Elkins, Albert Elkins, Claude Elkins, Earl Elkins and Jake Elkins all of Coeburn; Sister, Margaret Wilson, Coeburn; Half Sister, Nancy Dalton, Lynchburg; Special friend, William Hunsaker, Jr.; several nephews and several nieces.
Visitation for John Aldon "Pete" Elkins will be held at Estes Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday from 5:30 to 7:30 P.M. where funeral services will be at 7:30 P.M. with Rev. Les Ritchie and Rev. Marty Puckett officiating. The family and friends will meet at the cemetery for entombment at 1:00 P.M. Sunday in the Temple Hill Memorial Park in Castlewood.
