Coeburn, VA ~ Maude Ruth Carico Edwards, 107, passed away at her home on Tuesday, January 11, 2005 in Coeburn, Virginia.
Mrs. Edwards was born August 18, 1897 in Herald, Virginia, she was the oldest child of James Milton Carico and Nancy Hooker. She was married to Coeburn businessman Conley L. Edwards, Sr. in 1917 and for several years was secretary of Edwards Chevrolet Company in Coeburn, She and her husband, who died in 1950, raised four sons, all now deceased: Conley L Edwards, Jr., Douglas D. Edwards, Rhex A. Edwards and Bruce C. Edwards. Also proceeded in death by her brother, Bordie B. Carico and sister, Ruby C. Barnes.
A strong-willed person, she was active and lived independently well after her 100th birthday. During her centennial year, she was honored with an invitation by the mayor of Coeburn to be present at the opening of the Coeburn By-Pass. Known as "Granny" and "Aunt Maude" to an extended family, she enjoyed visits and conversations with friends and family throughout the year. She was the consistent winner of "oldest family member" attending annual Carico reunions on Sandy Ridge.
Survivors include 8 Grandchildren, 8 Great grandchildren, several cousins, nephews, nieces and their children.
Funeral services for Maude Ruth Edwards will be held Sunday, January 16, 2005 at 2:00 P.M. at Coeburn United Methodist Church with Rev. ED Nelson officiating.Burial will follow in the Laurel Grove Cemetery in Norton.Visitation will be held at Estes Funeral Home on Saturday from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M.The family requests in lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to: Coeburn United Methodist Church, P.O. The family wishes to express its deep appreciation to Granny's dedicated caregivers, Shirley Jackson, Edith Marshall, Mary Sanders and Christy Hensley, who opened their hearts and homes and made Granny part of their families.
