Melinda Lucille Sykes, born on July 3, 1962, in Clintwood, Virginia, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2026, at her home in Coeburn, Virginia. She loved animals of any kind and always enjoyed talking and being with her friends. Her life was a tapestry of love, strength, and enduring family bonds.

Melinda was the beloved daughter of the late Gerald Sykes and Lucille Stanley.

She is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Melissa Adkins and husband David Adkins Jr.; her best friend, Ray Hill; granddaughter, Cassidy Adkins and Jamie Stanley; sisters, Linda Bryant, and Betty Sykes; brother, Bobby Childress; several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Melinda’s deep devotion to her family was evident in every aspect of her life. Her home was a place of warmth and kindness, where family gathered to share in both the joys and challenges of life.

Melinda faced profound losses with remarkable grace. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gerald and Lucille; daughter, Amanda Jo Sykes; son, J.W. Counts; siblings, Debra Counts, Kathy Sigmond, and Wayne Sykes, and several cousin, nieces and nephews. The memory of these cherished family members remained alive in her heart, guiding her spirit and nurturing her resilience.

A burial service to honor Melinda’s life will be held at Hamilton Town Cemetery, located on Hamilton Town Road, Coeburn, VA 24230, on Tuesday, August 18, 2026 at 5:00pm. The service is open to all who wish to pay their respects and celebrate the life of a remarkable woman whose compassion and spirit will long be cherished. Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery for services.

Though her earthly journey has ended, Melinda Lucille Sykes’ memory and the love she gave so freely will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.
