Thelma Mae Greear, age 85, of Coeburn, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 30, 2026, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Wise, Virginia.

Born on March 4, 1941, in Coeburn, she was the daughter of the late James Howard Greear and Mossie (Harmon) Greear. Thelma was a woman who found joy in the simple things; she had a deep love for the great outdoors, gardening, and expressing her creativity through crafts and music.

A natural storyteller, she took great pride in her roots. She loved reminiscing about the past and could often be found sharing the rich history of the hills in Flatwoods with anyone who would listen.

Thelma was a true fighter, battling cancer with amazing strength and grace for many years. Her family was the cornerstone of her care, and she was profoundly grateful to her brother, Paul Greear; her nephew, Norman Greear and his wife Melinda; and her niece, Julie (Greear) Padgett and her husband Don, for their unwavering support and devotion in keeping her comfortable at home for as long as possible.

In addition to her many beloved nieces and nephews, she is survived by her brother, Paul (Shirley) Greear of Coeburn, VA.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Frankie Greear; her brothers, Homer, James "Troy", William Russell "W.R.", Roy, and Claude Greear; and her nephews, Russell and Randy Greear.

Thelma's legacy of resilience and her love for the Virginia hills will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.

Visitation will be held at Estes Funeral Home in Coeburn on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, from 1:00pm to 2:00pm. A cemetery service will follow on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at Greear Cemetery in Flatwoods Community in Coeburn, Virginia with Pastor Darrell Bolling officiating.
